I was once at a point where I was really confused as to what I needed to purchase to get my skincare routine right. I have had a number of people in the same situation come up to me to ask about what products they need to get for their skincare routines. In my experience, finding the right skincare product for your skin comes from understanding your skin’s condition and knowing what it is receptive to or what it is reactive to.

You may also have to try one or more products to find the perfect one for you, but ideally, get a professional skincare consultant to tell you what product would be best for your skin. My go-to consultants are from Bare The Community. Aside from this fact, there are certain essential items you need to have in your routine while on your journey to healthy and radiant skin.

1.Cleansers

Cleansing is the first step to keeping your skin clean and free from dirt, makeup, excess sebum.

Cleansing oil or balm and a face cleanser are great for this step especially if you are conversant with the double cleansing step which is great for your skin.

Just as you pay attention to your skin by giving it a good cleanse at least twice a day, your face also requires a certain amount of special care. You will need to get yourself cleansing products specially formulated for the face and your skin type.

The cleansing oil or balm is great for makeup removal, dislodging excess sebum, and deep cleansing clogged pores, and this should be your first step. The face cleanser may either take the form of a cream cleanser, a gel cleanser, or a foaming cleanser depending on your skin type. The face cleanser operates to remove any traces of makeup or oil residue left on your skin after the oil cleanse. Your cleanser is a good one if your skin doesn’t feel dry or tight after rinsing.

2. Toner

Toners are usually confused as lightening agents in this part of the world. However, a toner is basically an absorbing liquid which prepares your skin for the rest of your regimen. It corrects and balances the pH of the skin, hydrates the skin, and can be used twice daily after your cleansing step. The Klairs Supple Preparation Facial Unscented Toner has become a personal favorite.

3. Exfoliator

Achieving a youthful and radiant looking skin is definitely one of the goals a lot of skincare enthusiasts are drawn to. Who doesn’t want to glow? That is why exfoliating the skin is an important step in our routine. Exfoliating should be done 1 to 2 times a week.

The idea of exfoliating is to get rid of dead skin buildup on your skin to allow for skin turnover.

When I start to notice dry patchy flakes on my skin I know it is time to exfoliate because there is some dead skin build-up lurking on my skin.

Chemical exfoliants like AHAs, BHAs, and Glycolic Acid are great to use to exfoliate instead of using sugar and salt scrubs on your face, which may cause micro-tears and inflammation which may lead to bacterial infections and breakouts on your skin.

4. Sunscreen

This is one thing we are all guilty of disregarding. Either we think our skin tone does not require sunscreen or that we are staying indoors so we do not need sunscreen. Sunscreen is one of the skincare essentials we cannot compromise on. It is a must!

One of the ways to promote healthy skin is to give your skin UV protection. The use of Sunscreen to provide UV protection from your skin will not only prevent aging but also help with hyperpigmentation and the prevention of skin cancer.

It is the last step of your morning skincare routine before you get on with your makeup.

It is the one product you do not want to leave the house without! I have come to love the Bioré UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence SPF 50+.

5. Moisturizer

Hydration is great for the skin. Dehydrated skin will make your skin look dull and tired.

A moisturizer helps to keep moisture levels in the skin balanced while preventing the skin from drying out. I currently use the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Gel Cream and it is one I will repurchase.

6. Serums

I have come to find essences is very essential because they are great for the times you are targeting specific skin concerns. Face serums are lightweight and penetrate deeper to deliver active ingredients into your skin.

They have proven to increase moisture levels which is great for hydration and gives the skin a smoother and firmer texture. I tend to apply serums during my evening routines since it has more potent ingredients than my regular moisturizer, this helps to reap the benefits while I’m away in dreamland. The CosRx Advanced Snail Mucin Power Essence is a good one from the K-Beauty camp which works well for all skin types.

Building a skincare routine can be stressful sometimes especially if you are new to it and don’t know where to begin. Hopefully, this article helps to guide your steps and we cannot wait to hear back from you on your progress. If you don’t know where to start, Bare The Community can get you sorted out and guide you on your skincare journey!
